Reflections on Malaysia 2024
From our summer in Indonesia to our winter in Thailand 2024 we decided to stop in Malaysia on the way for a leisurely 40 nights to enjoy the warm hospitality and storied culinary delights of this utterly delightful destination in southeast Asia. We split our time between a first time visit to Johor Bahru — just over the border from Singapore and an easy overland border crossing — followed by a first-time stop in Malacca on the western coast. We return to Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands, destinations we began to explore on our first visit in 2022.
We stayed in a waterfront airbnb (2 bedroom, $61/night - property link) on the Malacca Strait from September 19-27, 2024. Since 2008, Malacca’s old town and the striking, distinctly European-looking red-colored buildings have been recognized as UNESCO world heritage sites recognizing the rich history of Porteguese and Dutch colonization in the 16th and 17th centuries.
