My Friend Alom
This is a personal story. Our friend Alom (see pic above) is one in a million — just one political refugee from Myanmar in a camp of one million people on the southern border of Bangladesh near Cox’s Bazar. He’s in his late 20’s and in the spirit of the great human rights advocate Mohib Ullah, see below, Alom is a leader in his community. He opened the very first convenience shop in his camp to help fund his other efforts that includes a just-in-time blood donation program to meet the critical medical needs in the community. He taught himself English. His life is difficult and politically complex. He wants to go home to Myanmar and wants a fair deal for his people, including citizenship recognition in Myanmar. That’s not going to be easy. He is an excellent candidate for emigration to a third country, such as the United States, where he will undoubtedly excel as he improves his education, helps to provide for his family and makes a much greater contribution to his Rohingya community. He has our complete support and we cheer him on at every opportunity!
